Yellowstone/Grand Tetons

My husband and I recently returned from an unforgettable trip through some of the most stunning landscapes the U.S. has to offer—Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. The gateway towns of Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Jackson, and Big Sky offer a surprising variety of restaurants catering to gluten-free and dairy-free diets, ensuring you can savor delicious meals while soaking in the beauty of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. If you're planning a trip to the Yellowstone region, here's a breakdown of where we stayed, dined, and explored, along with a few tips to make the most of your journey.

Where We Stayed

Our journey through Yellowstone and Grand Teton was elevated by cozy, well-located accommodations that served as perfect bases for our adventures:

  • AC Marriott in Bozeman, MT: A sleek, modern hotel in downtown Bozeman, offering easy access to local eateries and shops. Perfect for walking around and enjoying Bozeman’s vibrant downtown area.

  • Explorer Cabins at West Yellowstone: These cozy cabins, just steps from Yellowstone’s West Entrance, provided a rustic yet comfortable retreat with kitchenettes ideal for preparing your own gluten and dairy-free snacks. It made for extremely easy access to the park in the morning before the lines got too long!

  • Cloudveil in Jackson, WY: A luxurious stay in the heart of Jackson Hole, steps from the iconic Town Square. Its upscale vibe and proximity to top restaurants made it a standout.

  • The Wilson Hotel in Big Sky, MT: A charming and spacieous option with a laid-back feel, perfect for exploring the nearby restaurants and trails as well as soaking in Big Sky’s mountain views.

Where We Ate

From hearty BBQ to upscale farm-to-table fare, here are our top picks for gluten and dairy-free dining in the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area, all tested and loved during our trip. Of course, they were favorites of my husband as well who can eat anything!

Bozeman

  • The Farmer’s Daughter Cafe - This charming spot specializes in fresh, locally sourced dishes with clear gluten-free and dairy-free options. Their salads, grain bowls, and veggie-packed wraps (on gluten-free bread) were perfect for a light yet satisfying meal. The staff is well-versed in dietary needs, and the casual, welcoming vibe makes it ideal for a midday break. Try their huckleberry smoothie (dairy-free version) for a Montana twist

  • Feast - was the culinary highlight of our trip. This farm-to-table gem offers an incredible array of gluten and dairy-free dishes, with a menu that changes seasonally to showcase Montana’s local ingredients. Their grilled Montana beef and wild game options, paired with dairy-free sides like roasted root vegetables, were absolutely amazing. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, ensuring no cross-contamination. The cozy, upscale atmosphere made it feel like a special occasion. Book a table in advance—this place is a must-do

West Yellowstone

  • Firehole BBQ - A must visit, located a short walk from the Explorer Cabins, Firehole BBQ is a gem for gluten and dairy-free diners. This local favorite serves up mouthwatering BBQ with a focus on quality ingredients. Their menu clearly marks gluten-free options, and many dishes, like their saucy ribs and BBQ brisket, are naturally dairy-free or can be modified (just skip the cheese grits). I’m not usually a big BBQ fan, but we came back here twice in 3 days! The kitchen isn’t dedicated gluten-free, but it is a family run business who really cares to ensure your safety. Let them know your needs and they will accommodate!

Jackson Hole

  • Gather -  In the heart of Jackson Hole, Gather impressed us with its creative, gluten-free-friendly menu and welcoming atmosphere. This upscale yet approachable spot offers dishes like bison brisket and seafood options, many of which can be adapted to be dairy-free. They even had a GF chocolate flourless cake for dessert! Their staff is knowledgeable about dietary needs, and they take care to avoid cross-contamination. We loved the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the stunning Teton views from their outdoor seating.

  • The Blue Lion - This local staple combines a cozy ambiance with live music and a menu that caters well to dietary restrictions. Their wild game dishes, like elk or bison, are naturally gluten and dairy-free when paired with simple sides like roasted vegetables. The staff was happy to customize orders, ensuring no hidden dairy or gluten sneaked in. The live music added a fun vibe, making it a great spot to unwind.

Big Sky

  • Michaelangelo’s Italian - In Big Sky, Michaelangelo’s Italian stole our hearts with its authentic Italian cuisine tailored for gluten and dairy-free diets. Their gluten-free pasta options and dairy-free sauces (like marinara or olive oil-based) made for a heavenly meal. The wild mushroom risotto, as well as most of the meats and fish were able to be made GF and DF. Everything was delicious! The staff was attentive, double-checking ingredients to ensure our meal was safe.

What We Did

This region is rich with opportunities to explore - whether you’re hiking, rafting, or just soaking in the gorgeous views!

Bozeman

  • Stroll around downtown Bozeman. It’s full of charm, great shops and local character. If you have more time here, there are some great hikes and rafting excursions to consider.

Big Sky

  • In the winter this is a ski town. In the warmer weather, there are great hikes and beautiful views! We hiked the Ousel Falls Park Trail. It’s a fairly easy, beautiful trail that leads to a spectacular waterfall - perfect for families or a picnic at the falls.

Yellowstone National Park

  • I highly recommend a private tour of the park. It is enormous and unless you have unlimited time, this option is well worth the investment. We were lucky to go with Matt Henry of Private Tours of Yellowstone who made our visit unforgettable. His deep knowledge of the park’s ecosystem and history brought the landscape to life. He personalized it to us ensuring that we saw everything we wanted and even some hidden gems that we would never have known to look for.  Matt had us order lunch from a local deli (who had GF bread) which he picked up for us before we headed out in the morning. He gave us the freedom to hike when we wanted and he knew all the best spots for amazing views!

  • We considered rafting down the Yellowstone River but chose to spend our second day with Matt touring and hiking. There is SO much to see!

Grand Tetons/Jackson, WY

  • The drive from Yellowstone to the Grand Tetons alone is worth the visit! The views are spectacular! There are many different lakes at the bases of the various mountain peaks. Hiking, kayaking, boating, SUP in the lakes as well as rafting on the Snake River are all fantastic options here depending on how much time you have.

  • Jenny Lake - We had limited time in the Grand Tetons so we focused our time at Jenny Lake. The weather was perfect and the views were second to none. We took a boat ride across the lake and spent the day hiking in the area and to Inspiration Point. It was breathtaking!

Final Thoughts

This trip was a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and memorable meals. If you're looking to explore the American West, this itinerary hits a lot of highlights in a short amount of time—with enough flexibility to do more (or less), depending on your pace. We’re already dreaming of a return visit.

Gluten and dairy-free dining in the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area is not only possible but delicious, thanks to the region’s focus on fresh, local ingredients and accommodating restaurants.

Let me know if you go—and definitely call Matt for a Yellowstone tour. You won’t regret it!
